When it came to Rio de Janeiro, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers had the right idea: take a table at the Carioca Casino, watch the locals do their thing, and allow the rhythms and climate to slowly change you into one of them.
The city’s gilded vibrance and appetite for fun were captured beautifully in Rio, a 2011 3D animation from Blue Sky Studios which was basically a carnival in cartoon form. In that film, a nebbishy macaw called Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) and his timid human owner (Leslie Mann) migrated south from refrigerated Minnesota, and found new leases of love and life in the teeming Brazilian city.

This jumbled sequel, which was also directed by Carlos Saldanha, loses most of what made the first film such an infectious entertainment: Blu and family are packed off to the Amazon rainforest to meet his wild in-laws, and the plot quickly slumps into generic Meet-the-Parents strife.

Nigel (Jemaine Clement), a fiendish cockatoo with a drama-queen streak, was one of the first film’s trump cards, and thankfully comes back for more, although he’s mostly sidelined as a villain in favour of some standard-issue evil loggers.
His cover version of ‘I Will Survive’, though, is Rio 2’s undoubted peak: “If you try to cut me short I’ll just come back longer/If you beat me at ping-pong I’ll just play ping-ponger,” Nigel raps in a middle-eight even Gloria Gaynor couldn’t have sold. But the film’s many other songs, along with its scrappy plot, trite eco-sermonising and generic jungle setting, are too easily forgotten.
